I follow plain language principles. This means that I help you to convey your meaning in short, clear sentences. I may comment on how to eliminate lengthy words and unnecessary jargon. I may also suggest using the active voice to describe and explain.
- I believe that any piece of writing should be organised to make it visually appealing. Fonts, spacing, headings, margins and indentations all play a role in making a manuscript attractive and easy to navigate. So before the nitty-gritty editing work, I format the entire document, adding styles to headings and text to make it look good. I insert an electronic Table of Contents and Lists of Figures and Tables.
- I then use Track changes in MS Word and using UK/South African English principles, I identify and correct errors in spelling, usage, grammar, punctuation and style. I establish and maintain accuracy and consistency in spelling and formatting throughout your manuscript.
- Using the comment function, I may query an ambiguous meaning or a word. There should be clear, sensible connections between sentences and sections of the manuscript and I may flag areas for your attention.
- While editing, I develop a style sheet, showing the norms that I have adhered to. Once you are happy with the final edited document, I supply a certificate of editing should it be required.
- Your writing reflects your unique style and way of expressing yourself. I take care to maintain your voice, style and turn of phrase.
I adhere to the diversity and inclusive practices of the Professional Editors Guild
